Canon History: [Manga Canon] As a child, Teru Mikami suffered at the hands of his classmates. He had such a strong sense of what was right and what was wrong and that tended to lead him in to trouble with the other children. If he saw a fellow classmate being bullied, he would defend that classmate and usually end up being bullied himself.
And then suddenly, people Mikami felt were evil began to die off in odd accidents that left innocents completely unharmed. Even his own mother, who after trying to get Mikami to give up his adamant bully-fighting, was seen as evil in Mikami's eyes and died in a car accident along with three bullies.
Upon growing up, he decided to work as a prosecutor to allow him to continue his pursuit of justice. And then, Kira came on to the scene.
Kira was, in Teru Mikami's eyes, God. His own desire to see a righteous judgment passed on criminals was being performed right before his eyes. Kira was killing off all the heinous, violent criminals in the world; there was no other choice than for Kira to be God.
Mikami began to openly support Kira and his work, unafraid of the eventual fallout it may cause. He became active on the 'Kira's Kingdom' television show; a program created to support Kira and help spread his word.
Little did Mikami know that Kira himself was watching this program.
One day, Teru Mikami is visited by a Shinigami, and is told that Kira has chosen him to work for him. Eager to please, Mikami performs a deal with the shinigami; he would give up half of his remaining life span ion exchange for the ability to see a persons name and remaining lifespan just by looking at them.
He was given the tool that Kira had been using to carry out judgment; a black notebook with the words 'Death Note' printed on the front. Upon reading the rules, it was clear how Kira was doing his work. All he had to do was know a criminals name and face and write it down in the note, and then they would die.
Mikami took up this task with great joy. He would spend hour upon hour writing down names of criminals. Always uttering "Eliminate" as every name was written down. When unsure of what to do, or if not given instruction, Mikami would call Kira and ask for his guidance but would also decide things on his own with Kira's will in mind. Eventually, Mikami becomes even more ruthless in his ambitions than Kira. He wants to see the lazy and people who have committed crimes in the past judged as well, even after they have reformed.
Unbeknownst to him, Mikami was being closely inspected by a group trying to bring down Kira. They observed that Mikami followed an almost ritualistic daily pattern in his life. And it would turn out that this daily pattern and his devotion to Light would become their downfall.
When another of Kira's helpers was kidnapped, Mikami breaks his daily routine and goes to the bank earlier than usual to retrieve his Death Note from safe keeping. He jumps at the chance to kill the kidnapped woman before she has a chance to be forced to speak to the police. Acting like this without asking Kira first, Mikami was not aware that Kira had already killed the kidnapped woman. And now, the group watching him so closely knew exactly where he was hiding his Death Note.
This would lead to Mikami's arrest, which subsequently ruined Kira's plan of gathering everyone that opposed him and having Mikami write down their names. When confronted, Mikami became insane. He blames Kira for everything that happened and says that there is no way some one like him could be a god.
Ten days after his arrest, Mikami became even more insane and died, leading some to believe that the head of the group trying to capture Kira used the Death Note himself to manipulate Mikami's actions in order to capture Kira.
Deviation: The deviation begins at the point where Teru Mikami decides he would like to see the lazy and reformed criminals killed as well. He presented this idea to Kira and when Kira rejected it, Mikami becomes enraged. The prosecutor begins his own investigation on Kira to find out who he really was, knowing now that this Kira is not god, but a fake god. Mikami resolves to find him, kill him, and become a god himself.
When the investigation in to who Kira really is does not go so well for Mikami, he decides on a different plan. Mikami begins to act irrational and bold, explaining to Kira in a phone conversation that he is going insane without him, and needs to be with him. Not able to kill Mikami because he is still needed for his plan to work, Kira agrees to meet with him.
The two meet a week later in a hotel room. Using his shinigami eyes, Mikami sees that Kira's name is Light Yagami. After spending the night together, and convincing Light of his loyalty to Kira, Mikami leaves the other and goes directly to the bank, where his Death Note is kept safe.
Without hesitation, Mikami writes down in his note : "Light Yagami - Death by Traffic Accident - At exactly 2:45 PM, Light Yagami will walk out in to the middle of traffic with a loudspeaker. He will announce to everyone in the vicinity that he is Kira before a large truck hits him, killing him instantly."
The next day, it was announced on the news that Yagami Light died.
And so, Mikami allowed the world to believe that Kira was gone, laying dormant for several months. Finally, when it seemed things were getting back to normal, Mikami began to judge an entire prison every night. He left no criminal, no matter the crime, unpunished. In his opinion, if you wronged someone, you deserved to die.
And so Kira was back, and the world knew that Kira was back with a vengeance. Mikami had emptied every prison in Japan within two months, and was ready to move on to the United States when it seemed like fate would have something different in store for him; he was brought to a strange glass tower.
Personality: [189 Words] Mikami tends to show many different sides to his personality. On one side, he is merely quiet and intense; a very serious individual. However, when passing judgment, he seems to get excited very easily. He almost becomes a maniac, chanting a mantra of "Eliminate, eliminate, eliminate" as he clenses the world. He believes that he is now a God, and protecting the world. He is full of himself and, in his opinion, can do no wrong. Mikami believes that perfection is something he has achieved and that without it, he would be meaningless.
He may suffer from minor Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Mikami needs for things to happen in a set strict schedule or he begins to feel uncomfortable. Everything is done precisely at the exact same time on the exact same day. He has been known to break this habit however if the situation is dire enough.
When cornered, Mikami becomes almost animalistic in the way he behaves. He becomes irrational and throws blame at everyone else but himself because he is perfect in his opinion. He is also the type that would most certainly rather die than face failure.
Appearance: Teru Mikami is of average height for a Japanese man, standing at 5 feet and 9 inches (175 Centimeters). He is thin, weighing only 123 pounds (56 kilograms). He goes to the gym after work nearly every day which has left him rather well-built but not overly muscular. His eyes are a deep brown and always have an intense look in them, but will change to red when he is using his shinigami eyes to read the name of a person. Jet-black hair comes down to his shoulders in short choppy layers. His skin has grown pale as of late from staying indoors to judge so much.
Abilities: His only real 'ability' is the fact that he has the shinigami eyes - a power that allows him to see the remaining life span and name of any human whose face he sees. The only exception is those with Death Notes; he cannot see their life spans.
Strengths: Physically, Mikami is pretty strong from his daily workouts, but it is nothing above a normal humans strength. He is also very intelligent and can usually reason his way out of a problem.
Weaknesses: Physically, Mikami has poor eyesight and without his glasses this would become a problem for him. Mentally, while intelligent, Mikami is highly unstable. If a person points out a flaw to him, he will become mentally distraught and irrational.
